Drama: The Miracle WorkerThroughout this unit we will be studying the drama/ play genre. A play is a form of literature written by a playwright. It is different from a novel or short story in a few ways. Firstly, a play consists of dialogue between characters. Secondly, a play is broken down by acts and scenes- not chapters. Thirdly, a play is written to be preformed. Although plays are little different than the short stories and the novels that we have read so far, they are similar in the sense that they also have protagonists, rising action, etc... so we can use all of the literary terms that we have learned so far to help us discuss The Miracle Worker.

Journal Topics
Directions: Choose ONE of the following journal prompts to write about. Remember, your journals must follow the proper format and that you will be graded according to the rubric.
Topic #1: This week we read and talked about people who were determined to do something even against the odds. Annie Sullivan was determined to teach a child who was deaf and blind and she succeeded. Norman Cousins’ was determined to overcome his disease and he did. Write about a time in your life where, even against the odds, you were so determined to do something that you succeeded. What helped you to accomplish your goal(s)? What kind of attitude did you have? Did you come up with a checklist or a routine to help you? If so, what was it? And finally, what lesson did you learn after succeeding? What impact did it have on you?
Topic #2: This week we read and talked a lot about alternative methods in both teaching (Annie Sullivan) and in treatments (Norman Cousins). Think about one or two types of alternative treatments of medicines and compare it with a more conventional method. Finally, write about which one, in your opinion, is better and why.
