Scout is a young girl growing up in Maycomb, Alabama during the US Great Depression of the 1930's. Scout, her brother, Jem, and their friend, Dill, are determined to get a glimpse of their reclusive neighbor, Boo Radley. Journals
Directions: Choose ONE of the four topics to journal about. Remember, your journals must follow the proper format and that you will be graded according to the rubric.
Topic #1: In Chapter 10, Maycomb sees Atticus as brave when he shots the mad dog. In Chapter 11, Atticus describes real courage as "knowing your licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what" when he is talking about Mrs. Dubose (pg. 128). Compare and contrast both examples of courage. Then tell which act of courage you think is true courage and explain why.
Topic #2: In Chapter 11, Atticus says that "before I can live with other folks, I've got to live with myself. The one thing that doesn't abide by majority rule is a person's conscience" (pg. 120). What does Atticus men by this quote? Do you agree with him? Why or why not?
Topic #3: Are there people in your neighborhood who are like any of the characters in the novel? Change the real person's name so his/her identity remains anonymous, and describe how he or she is like a particular character.
Topic #4: What changes in Scout are more about understanding others (growth in social or moral awareness) than physical? What lessons have you learned in self-control, tolerance, and respect?

To Kill a Mockingbird Communication and Media: Group Project |
In groups of three or four, you will examine an issue in To Kill a Mockingbird and prove how that issue is still prevalent in America today from multiple perspectives. You will present three to five different modes of media (such as articles, poems, videos, tv/movie clips, books, etc.) to fully explain a meaningful understanding of this issue. Each group will have a different issue to focus on for this project. You should examine both the history and the context of the issue in the novel and currently. Your goal is to come to a complete understanding of a particular issue within America today.
